Emails!

This cartoon has to do with the "location and organization of the information" portion of digital literacy. It's a great example of how excessive use of email can be harmful in formal situations, such as work. No one wants their inbox to be filled up with useless emails. If you are the one that is sending all the forwards or useless group emails, then people are going to complain.

Companies introduce computers and email to increase efficiency, so if they hear that emails are going around the whole office that have nothing to do with work, they aren't going to be pleased.

Excessive use of email can be frustrating in any situation, and this is familiar to all of us, I'm sure. A time when I get very annoyed was when I was receiving hundreds of emails a day on my ook-mail. People were trying to sell their books; as if this wasn't bad enough, students who wanted to buy them would reply and hit "reply to all"!

  1. This is definately an annoying occurance!! I know exactly how you feel. I too was hit the the "reply all" pest on my Ookmail. It is very annoying to have to delete hundreds of emails that have no relevence to you. When it comes to excessive email nothing is worse than when the subject has nothing to deal with you or even interests you.

This cartoon really conveys the fact that I am trying to get across. The boss that receives the 100 emails definately feels the pain that is received when hit with the "reply all" pest.

  2. This seems to be the major problem with the ookmail system that needs to be addressed before next year. Ookmail has become almost useless to receive information because any legitamit email is burried under hundreds of email about books for sale and people requesting not to be sent emails that its almost be drowned by students.

This situation is relevent in many situations in the work environment. Seeing how people are willing to communicate about just about anything shows that people need to process their emails before sending them to see if the email has a valid purpose and worth everyones time to address the email.

  3. This cartoon shows an ineffective way of using email. Email should be used to quickly relay important information, not to ask about something as meaningless as a missing pen. Workplaces should have strict rules about the abuse of using emails to avoid this situation.

The "reply all" button has also affected me. One would think that in a post secondary institution, such as NAIT, individuals would be intelligent enough to not press "reply all" and render our OOKmail useless. This is an issue that quickly needs to be addressed so students can use what could be a very useful communication device again.
